R.I.P. 2Pac; Unreleased Recordings Being Released

13 years ago today, on September 13th 1996, Hip-Hop lost it's most prominent icon and one of the greatest MC’s of all time, Tupac Amaru Shakur, who died from gunshot wounds suffered during a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas.25-year-old Shakur left behind the biggest catalogue known to the history of music, with over 1000 unreleased recordings still yet to be heard by the general public. The former powerhouse record label Death Row was on the auction block earlier this year, allowing canadian firm WIDEawake Entertainment Group to purchase the label from bankruptcy for $18 million in January. It now plans what it says will be a "hugely profitable" business strategy for the company, built upon digital and mobile formats, synchronization licensing deals for television and film, and the issuing of previously unreleased material -- including songs by 2Pac. WIDEawake have the rights to release 13 recordings by Shakur, chosen from a selection of unreleased tracks.Within months of acquiring the company's somewhat depreciated assets, Lara Lavi, current CEO of WIDEawake Death Row, has already initiated new releases from the label. Amidst praise and neighs alike, on September 1st the first album distributed was a reissue of Dr. Dre’s "Chronic", called "Chronic Re-Lit" which included seven bonus tracks, letting listeners hear a few leftovers from their favourite inmates’ golden years.WIDEawake Death Row Entertainment look set to continue releasing never before heard music from Death Row. Last week they revealed the track listing for an upcoming Snoop Doggy Dogg album entitled "The Lost Sessions Vol. 1", an album that will consist of unreleased tracks from Snoop Dogg, recorded during his time on Death Row.Fans around the world can now log-on at http://www.deathrowwideawake.com/, to discuss and vote for what unreleased recordings they would like to hear from the multi-million dollar catalog, which includes completed album projects from the likes of Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Tupac, Tha Dogg Pound, Lady of Rage, Crooked I, and even MC Hammer.

RythmIQ ft Crooked I, Jay Rock, Stat Quo & More

Shut Up & Listen!! “The dumb are mostly intrigued by the drum” – classic lyrics from the Wu-Tang Clan referencing towards a hip-hop fan base mostly intrigued by good beats with no lyrics; how about a combination of both? That is what to expect when west coast producer RythmIQ releases his upcoming album “Shut Up & Listen.”A west coast producer on the come up, it was no question whether or not RythmIQ could release an album filled with A-List beats; but how do you make sure the lyrics are on par? RythmIQ had a strategy for that as well - you tap west coast lyricists Crooked I & Jay Rock to appear on the album, as well as out of town legends such as the Chi-town’s Twista; other guest appearances include Royce Da 5’9, Hot Rod, Ludacris protégé Willy Northpole, former Aftermath standout Stat Quo, and Black Wall Street member, Juice. With the upcoming release of “Shut Up & Listen”, RythmIQ is sure to surprise anyone who gives the album a chance, and will quickly be thrown in the conversation of best up-and-coming west coast producers that he is so often shafted from; from now on, expect to hear people like Terrace Martin & RythmIQ in the same sentence. For more on RythmIQ, visit his Official MySpace.Stay tuned to Dubcnn as we bring you an exclusive interview with RythmIQ as he breaks down the studio experiences for his debut album “Shut Up & Listen” with Crooked I, Jay Rock, Stat Quo, Twista, Royce Da 5’9, Hot Rod, Willy Northpole, Juice and more.

Slaughterhouse Define 'Hottest MC' -- But Can They Make Our List?

When you ask the members of Slaughterhouse — Royce Da 5'9", Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz and Crooked I — what it means to be the Hottest MC in the Game, you'll get four different opinions. There's so many different dimensions of a hot MC," Ortiz said. "You gotta be able to do what you do in the booth. Be yourself in interviews. Be a great showman. Be an on-spot rap dude. You gotta have the complete package. If you do records well and get up onstage and you're looking at your shoes, you're not a hot MC. You gotta have every element mastered. You gotta love the art."
Budden (who has ranked very high early on in our Hottest MCs fan poll) has a very gruff relationship with the word "hot."
"Joe Budden is against the word 'hot,' " the Jersey native said, talking about himself in third person. "I don't like it. I don't use it. 'Hot' is not something that comes down to your craft. That's why I despise the word. It's too many other things that come into the equation. The label can make somebody hot. It's to the point now where the artist and the fans don't even decide what's hot."
"I equate the word 'hot' with buzz," Royce chimed in. "Somebody can have a big buzz and be hot. It doesn't make them an MC. 'Hot' to me, I don't use the word either. 'Hot MC' doesn't mean he can rhyme. I can wake up and turn my swag on, doesn't mean I'm a dope MC. It means I'm hot for the moment."
Crooked I had the most optimistic viewpoint when talking about Hot MCs.
"I think 'hot' is a way for everybody putting together the list to create a conversation," Crook said. "You can put so many different things under 'hot' that can spark a debate. I think it's about the debate. I don't think it's about the actual list."
Crooked said if you want to just judge on skills, then you have to put the title 'dope' on the list, then all four members of Slaughterhouse would definitely make the top-10 rankings. But what about our upcoming Hottest MCs in the Game list? (To see what it takes to make the list, check out our Hottest MCs criteria.)
All the members would make it if it were based strictly on lyrics. They all have a huge buzz on the Internet, especially Budden, who has been very forthcoming with his personal and professional life on Joe Budden TV and UStream. Nothing is off limits, from his girlfriend talking about a stranger punching her in the eye to Joey's beef with Raekwon the Chef to studio recording sessions.
But Slaughterhouse have put out albums independently thus far and have to complete with artists who sell hundreds of thousands in one week. Now it's up to the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust to decide.
Who do you think is the Hottest MC in the Game? Don't forget to vote from now through September 21 to have your voice heard.
